KEY TAKEAWAYS

Central China’s IDC market size hit RMB 5.54 billion in 2020, up 19.9% year-on-year, accounting for 5.6% of national total. Hubei, Hunan and Henan rolled out supportive digital economy policies to boost local data center construction and demand.

Wuhan, Changsha and Zhengzhou contributed RMB 4.09 billion of market volume, taking up 73.8% of regional total. Wuhan ranks first with RMB 1.57 billion due to its national backbone network node advantage.

In 2020, rack services generated 56.2% of regional IDC revenue, port services 34.1% and value-added services 9.8%. Port demand ratio is higher than first-tier eastern cities for national internet network node layout.

Total operational racks in Central China reached 80,000 by end-2020, a 23.1% year-on-year jump. Wuhan, Changsha and Zhengzhou owned 53,000 racks together (66.3%), with Wuhan’s 26,000 racks far exceeding the other two cities.

Internet sectors (video, e-commerce, games) account for 57.3% of regional demand; traditional industries including government, finance and manufacturing take 35.5%, while cloud vendors only occupy 7.2% with limited large resource pools.

Benefiting from internet enterprises setting regional headquarters in Central China, the market will sustain roughly 20% annual growth, with total regional IDC scale projected to hit RMB 10.48 billion by 2023.
